Mission Possible: To Read

As a new elementary school librarian, I need to be well-versed in children’s literature.  I especially need to be well-versed in award-winning children’s literature!  The purpose of this blog is to document my progress reading Newbery Honor and Medal books and Caldecotts.  Each posting will include, in the tags, the author or illustrator’s surname, the title, if it won a medal or an honor, and that year.

    I have some Newbery recommendations:
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH (duh)
    Island of the Blue Dolphins
    I, Juan de Pareja
The Egypt Game (honor, not winner, but SOOO good)
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
    Bridge to Terebithia
Shabanu, Daughter of the Wind, which I read in 5th grade but could not for the life of me remember the title of until the Newbery wiki article jogged my memory. (another honor, and how it lost I will never know)

Oh man, I think I’ll be stopping by here pretty often. When I was in Elementary and Middle school, my mother gave me a standing deal where she would give me $75 if I finished all of the Newberry books. I finished about 3/4 of them before I got swept away into adult fiction. Now there’s about 6 books that weren’t on the list before, but I still have vivid memories of the books I did read. You should check out my latest post on my favorite childrens/YA books.
